Start the conversation

Stuart Campbell • July 1, 2021
As apart of our campaign to raise awareness for Autism Awareness Australia, JV's Director Stu Campbell had the opportunity to sit down (via Zoom) with Autism Awareness Australia's CEO, Nicole Rogerson.

Nicole highlighted that Autism Awareness Australia's goal is simple: "to improve the lives of all Australians on the autism spectrum and the families who love them".

"We empower parents and carers with quality information and resources. We provide targeted educational programs to families, professionals and the broader community. We support inclusion for people on the autism spectrum… and we have some fun along the way too".

The pair discussed Autism and how to be more aware of your employees, team mates, and colleagues own personal situations with regards to Autism. This might be in relation to a partner, child or other family member who has some form of Autism.

Nicole's insights serve as a good reminder to continually try to increase the education and understanding of Autism in Australia.

Question One.

How can we best support someone who is a caregiver or a parent of a child that is on the spectrum?

Question 2.

What do your recommend for a parent or caregiver of a child (with Autism) on how best to look after themselves?

Question 3.

As an employer, is one of our best angles to be more self aware of employees who potentially have some challenges as a parent?

From here, the Q&A became a little more conversational. Stu discusses looking back on how he has developed from his early career days with regards to his own awareness of his employees personal situations and the actions he has taken for his employees.

While Nicole talks to the possible flexibility that family dynamics may require from time to time, as well as talking about Autism as an everyday part of life and society.

A huge thanks to Nicole for joining us to have this discussion.

We hope it's provided some insight and shed light on starting the conversation around Autism and the workplace.
