6 Ways to create a mentally healthy workplace

The way construction employees think and feel at work can vastly impact everything from communication and productivity to overall success in their role. Whether employees are on a construction site or not, it’s important for all Managers and Supervisors to reflect on their processes and management styles to ensure a healthy workplace culture.

Did you know that according to the mental health initiative, HeadsUp, 45% of Australians experience some level of mental health illness during their lifetime?

The level of control an employee feels over their work situation and whether or not an employee feels valued in the workplace are all factors that can affect work performance, absenteeism, and staff turnover.

Obviously, there are many influences that can affect employee mental health such as past experiences, trauma or genetics. However, there are simple processes that managers can put in place to promote the health and wellbeing for each team member.

Here are 6 top tips to create a mentally healthy workplace:

1. Offer flexible work conditions

Where possible, create flexibility around working hours, in regard to where, when and how work is performed. Companies that promote a work-life balance often find that their employees are more productive and motivated and are generally less stressed during work hours.

2. Maintain constant communication

It’s important to provide clear communication, positive feedback and emotional support daily and particularly while big changes are taking place within the business.

3. Involvement with decision making

Consulting with employees on decision making processes allows employees to voice their opinions and share their knowledge. This collaboration develops a healthy relationship between employees and their managers and improves a strong sense of teamwork.

4. Combat the stigma around mental health

It is important that managers speak openly and actively about mental health in the workplace and ensure that resources are made accessible to everyone.

5. Provide mentoring and coaching

Providing ongoing professional development and training vastly increases employee job satisfaction, boosts individual self-confidence and promotes overall professional and personal growth, which in turn immensely impacts positive mental health.

6. Implement a zero tolerance for bullying and discrimination

It is vital to create a greater awareness of bullying and inappropriate behaviours in the workplace. Ensure policies and procedures are implemented to protect anyone who reports or witnesses mistreatment.
